Waymo to launch robotaxi service in Singapore by 2028
Alphabet-owned Waymo has announced plans to launch its autonomous robotaxi service in Singapore by 2028, marking the company’s first entry into Southeast Asia.
The expansion will begin in the coming months with the arrival of an initial fleet of Jaguar I-PACE electric vehicles. These vehicles will undergo mapping and validation driving to familiarize the technology with local road geometry and tropical monsoon weather conditions. In 2027, the company will conduct testing with trained autonomous specialists behind the wheel before aiming for fully autonomous public ride-hailing services in 2028.
Waymo must secure approval from Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) and pass safety assessments at the Centre of Excellence for Testing and Research (CETRAN) before deploying on public roads. Singapore Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow welcomed the entry, noting that the technology could contribute to the nation's vision for diverse transport options.
This move is part of Waymo’s broader international expansion strategy, which includes planned launches in London, Tokyo, and Munich.
