Waymo to launch robotaxi services in Munich by 2027

Waymo, an Alphabet subsidiary, has announced its expansion into the European Union, selecting Munich, Germany, as its first planned market in the region. The company aims to launch commercial robotaxi services by the end of 2027.

In the coming weeks, Waymo will begin an initial phase involving manual mapping and test drives. During this period, vehicles will be operated by trained safety drivers to collect data on local road networks, traffic patterns, and signage to prepare the Waymo Driver system for the local environment. The initial fleet is expected to consist of electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles.

Germany provides a favorable regulatory environment for this expansion, as it has had a legal framework for Level 4 autonomous driving since 2021. Waymo is working with local, state, and federal authorities to secure the necessary permits for full commercial operation. The company views Munich as a strategic hub due to its significance in the global automotive and technology sectors.
