We Energies faces opposition to proposed 14% rate hike

We Energies is proposing a series of electricity rate increases that could raise costs for residential customers by approximately 14% by 2028. The proposal includes a 10% increase in 2027 and an additional 5.5% in 2028, which the utility estimates would cost the average residential customer an extra $280 per year.

During public hearings held by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, dozens of residents and community leaders expressed strong opposition. Critics cited concerns regarding affordability, noting that many households are already struggling with the rising costs of groceries, gas, and healthcare. Some opponents pointed to the company’s reported $1.9 billion profit in 2025 as a reason to deny the hike.

We Energies maintains that the increases are necessary to fund approximately $650 million in approved projects, including solar, wind, and battery storage, to improve grid reliability and expand clean energy. The company stated that even with the proposed hikes, typical bills would remain below the national average and in line with other Midwest utilities. Additionally, officials noted that infrastructure and energy costs for data centers would be covered by those entities rather than residential customers.
