Wealthsimple prediction markets app highlights gaps in Canadian gambling regulations
Wealthsimple has launched a prediction‑markets application in partnership with U.S. platform Kalshi, becoming the second firm authorized by the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) after Interactive Brokers Canada. The app gives Canadian users access to roughly 4,000 contracts covering economic forecasts, environmental forecasts and financial indicators, each with a minimum 30‑day maturity. CIRO prohibits contracts tied to elections, political events, or any activity illegal under Canadian law, underscoring regulatory limits on such platforms.
The rollout draws attention to shortcomings in Canada’s gambling‑protection framework as prediction markets, a fast‑growing global industry worth billions, blur the line between investment‑type betting and traditional gambling. While operators act as clearing houses rather than house‑betting entities, the new service raises questions about how existing regulations address these emerging financial products.
