Wealthsimple prediction market launch in Canada
Overview
Wealthsimple has launched a prediction-market application in Canada through a partnership with the U.S.-based platform Kalshi. Authorized by the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO), the service allows users to trade contracts on approximately 4,000 economic, financial, and environmental indicators with a minimum 30-day maturity.
Current CIRO regulations prohibit trading on political events, elections, sports, or entertainment. While Wealthsimple's app includes view-only options for these restricted high-interest categories, they remain untradable under existing frameworks.
The rollout has highlighted potential gaps in Canadian gambling and financial regulations as prediction markets blur the distinction between investment products and traditional gambling. In response to these limitations, Wealthsimple has released a whitepaper proposing regulatory structures for prediction markets in Canada, including potential frameworks for sports contracts.
