Piraí do Sul tornado destroys homes and displaces residents in Paraná

A tornado struck the rural area of Piraí do Sul in the Campos Gerais region of Paraná on Saturday, August 8. The meteorological phenomenon, confirmed by Simepar, caused significant destruction, affecting approximately 20 residences and leaving at least 20 people displaced. The most severe damage occurred in the communities of Capinzal, Jararaca, Fundão, and the Santo André neighborhood, located about 30 kilometers from the city center.

Reports indicate that the winds, estimated by some sources to have exceeded 250 km/h, uprooted trees, destroyed roofs, and damaged agricultural structures such as barns and poultry farms. The Santo André neighborhood was temporarily isolated due to fallen trees blocking roads. While no fatalities were reported, one resident was injured when a wooden structure collapsed on him.

Emergency response teams from the Civil Defense, Simepar, and the Fire Department have been working to provide humanitarian aid, including the distribution of tarps to protect damaged homes. The Federation of Agriculture of the State of Paraná (Faep) is calling for emergency credit and immediate restoration of the electrical grid to support affected farmers. This event marks the tenth confirmed tornado in Paraná in 2026.

Meteorological alerts remain in effect for the state, with potential for further storms, hail, and high winds throughout the week.
