Severe weather and flooding in Brazil

Several Brazilian municipalities have experienced severe weather events resulting in infrastructure damage and emergency declarations. In late July 2026, heavy storms, strong winds, and intense rainfall caused flooding and property damage in Guabiruba, Itatuba, São João de Meriti, and Ubatuba. These events led to power outages, blocked roads, and the need for emergency shelters and debris clearance.

By early August 2026, weather-related disruptions continued. On August 8, 2026, a tornado struck the rural areas of Piraí do Sul, Paraná, specifically impacting the communities of Capinzal, Jararaca, Fundão, and the Santo André neighborhood. The tornado damaged approximately 20 residences and displaced at least 20 people. One injury was reported following the collapse of a wooden structure, which caused head and spinal injuries to a resident.

Reports indicate that winds, which some sources estimate exceeded 250 km/h, uprooted trees, destroyed roofs, and damaged agricultural structures such as barns and poultry farms. The Santo André neighborhood was temporarily isolated due to fallen trees blocking roads. While no fatalities were reported, emergency response teams from the Civil Defense, Simepar, and the Fire Department have been providing humanitarian aid, including food, water, and tarps to protect damaged homes.

This event marks the 10th tornado recorded in Paraná in 2026. The Federation of Agriculture of the State of Paraná (Faep) has called for emergency credit and the immediate restoration of electrical services to support affected farmers and residents. Meteorological alerts remain in effect for the state, with potential for further storms, hail, and high winds. Other municipalities in Paraná, including Jaguariaíva, Sapopema, and Candói, also reported weather-related damage.
