South American weather shifts driven by El Niño and atmospheric changes

Meteorological agencies are warning of significant weather shifts across South America, driven largely by the strengthening El Niño phenomenon. In Brazil, Inmet reports a change in atmospheric patterns starting September 18, which will transport warm, humid air toward the South, increasing rainfall and instability over the weekend.

Specific regional alerts include: - Mato Grosso do Sul: Potential for isolated storms, lightning, and hail, with temperatures reaching up to 39°C and low humidity levels increasing wildfire risks. - Acre: Yellow alerts for intense rainfall and winds up to 60 km/h. - Bahia: Inema predicts above-average temperatures and rainfall levels that may fall below historical averages through November, with some areas seeing temperatures near 40°C. - Mato Grosso: Unusual rainfall in September due to successive cold fronts and the Antarctic Oscillation.

Globally, NOAA indicates a 90% probability that El Niño will reach very strong intensity by late 2026 or early 2027. In Argentina, models suggest a wetter scenario for the Mesopotamia region during the September-November quarter.
