Mexico and Chile face extreme weather with heavy rains and intense heat
Mexico is facing a period of extreme weather characterized by the Mexican monsoon and intense heat. The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) has forecasted heavy to intense rainfall in several regions, including Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, and Sinaloa, with accumulations potentially reaching 150 mm. Other areas such as Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Chiapas are also expected to experience significant precipitation accompanied by electrical storms, strong winds, and hail.
Simultaneously, extreme heat persists across northern Mexico. Temperatures are expected to exceed 45 °C in parts of Baja California, with heatwaves affecting states like Nuevo León and Tamaulipas. In Baja California, extreme heat has already been linked to multiple fatalities due to heatstroke and dehydration.
In Chile, a new frontal system is expected to bring significant rainfall, with the Atacama and Coquimbo regions under a yellow alert issued by SENAPRED. The Atacama region could see accumulations of up to 100 mm within 48 hours. Meanwhile, in the Atlantic, authorities are monitoring tropical waves, though they currently pose no direct cyclone threat to the Yucatán Peninsula.
