Ecuador weather alerts issued for heavy rain and storms

Heavy rainfall and electrical storms have impacted various regions of Ecuador, particularly in Quito and the coastal provinces. The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) issued warnings for strong to very strong precipitation, potential hail, and wind gusts effective through the morning of October 19.

In Quito, sectors such as Tumbaco and the Simón Bolívar avenue experienced significant rainfall. The Empresa Eléctrica Quito (EEQ) reported that corrective works were required to restore power in several areas, including Selva Alegre, La Primavera, and Rumiloma, following storm-related disruptions.

The National Risk Management Secretariat has requested local governments in ten provinces to activate emergency protocols. High risks of flooding, landslides, and rising river levels are noted in Guayas, Los Ríos, and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas. Authorities have also highlighted that these weather patterns are influenced by high sea surface temperatures and the warm phase of El Niño.
