Latin America faces diverse El Niño impacts from Bolivia to Costa Rica
Latin America is facing diverse and severe impacts from the El Niño phenomenon. In Bolivia, Senamhi has warned of a 'Super Niño' through early 2027, which could trigger extreme heat, forest fires, floods, and localized droughts, particularly in the eastern regions.
In Peru, Verisk Maplecroft identifies significant risks to the mining sector, logistics, and agriculture due to varying rainfall and drought patterns. The country faces institutional challenges in implementing mitigation measures for these climate-driven risks.
In Costa Rica, intense rainfall in the Caribbean and Talamanca regions has caused cacao production losses of 50% to 60% on some farms, as excess moisture causes flower drop and promotes disease.
Conversely, in Argentina, the Bolsa de Comercio de Rosario reports that El Niño has not yet produced the expected rainfall. Persistent cold air from Patagonia and a cold anomaly in the Atlantic are currently preventing moisture from reaching the central agricultural regions.
