Morocco weather alert: Heatwave and thunderstorms expected

The Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology has issued an orange alert for a significant weather event involving a heatwave and thunderstorms across several provinces.

Extreme temperatures between 42°C and 46°C are expected in southern and southeastern regions, including Assa-Zag, Tata, Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab, Aousserd, Es-Semara, and Zagora, lasting from Saturday through Tuesday. Other provinces, such as Marrakech, Fès, and Meknès, are forecasted to experience temperatures between 38°C and 42°C through Monday.

Simultaneously, thunderstorms accompanied by hail and strong wind gusts are predicted for mountainous areas, specifically Ifrane, Midelt, Boulemane, and Khénifra. These storms, expected to produce between 15 and 25 mm of rainfall, are forecasted to occur on Saturday between 2:00 PM and 11:00 PM. Authorities advise residents to take precautions against heatstroke and to exercise caution near valleys and mountain roads due to potential flash floods and reduced visibility.
