Spain floods: DANA Adam causes fatalities and mass confinement

The DANA Adam storm has caused severe flooding and fatalities across eastern Spain, particularly in the Valencian Community and Catalonia. At least four deaths have been confirmed, including a woman swept away in Catalonia and multiple victims in the Valencia region, including a 79-year-old woman in Oliva and a 64-year-old man at a campsite.

In response to the extreme weather, the Generalitat Valenciana ordered the confinement of 145 municipalities in the southern coast of Valencia and northern Alicante to restrict mobility. Emergency services, including the Military Emergency Unit (UME) and the Guardia Civil, have deployed over 15 helicopters and various watercraft to conduct rescue operations for people trapped in homes or on rooftops.

Rainfall levels have reached extraordinary heights, with some areas recording over 700 liters per square meter. Educational activities have been suspended in dozens of municipalities across the region, including 15 in Alicante and several in Valencia and the Balearic Islands, to ensure public safety during the peak of the storm.
