Storm Adam causes fatalities and extreme flooding in Spain

Overview

Storm Adam, a DANA (isolated high-altitude depression), continues to cause severe weather disruptions across the Spanish Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands. The storm has resulted in at least four fatalities: in Catalonia, a 35-year-old woman was swept away by a torrent, and in the Valencian Community, three deaths were confirmed, including a 79-year-old woman in Oliva, a 64-year-old man at a campsite, and a man who drowned in Sagunto.

In the Valencian Community and Alicante, the situation has caused widespread destruction, with streets turning into rivers, vehicles being swept away, and homes inundated. In some areas, water levels reached nearly two meters, forcing residents to seek refuge on rooftops or upper floors. Authorities previously implemented confinement in 145 municipalities, affecting approximately 800,000 to 900,000 people. While general confinement orders have since been lifted, school activities remain suspended in several municipalities, including Miramar, Oliva, Bellreguard, Piles, El Verger, and Els Poblets, to allow for safety inspections of buildings and roads.

Some areas recorded unprecedented rainfall exceeding 700 liters per square meter in less than 48 hours, a phenomenon the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) noted has not been seen in the region since 1987. Emergency services, including the fire department, the Guardia Civil, and the Military Emergencies Unit (UME), have conducted hundreds of rescue operations using helicopters and boats. Significant infrastructure damage, including road closures and railway disruptions, continues to impact the region. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has promised full government support to manage the aftermath.
