Brazil soybean planting begins amid strong El Niño risks

Soybean planting for the 2026/27 season has begun in Brazil, with Mato Grosso and Paraná leading the process. However, the agricultural sector faces significant risks due to a potentially very strong El Niño phenomenon. Both NOAA and Inmet estimate a 90% probability of high intensity during the upcoming spring and summer. This weather pattern threatens to cause irregular rainfall in the North-Central regions and excessive moisture in the South, which could saturate soil and hinder machinery access.

In the energy sector, recent rainfall in the Southeast and Midwest has stabilized hydroelectric reservoirs, providing a temporary buffer and lowering free-market energy prices. Despite this, meteorologists warn of future volatility. Experts suggest that as the season progresses toward late 2026 and early 2027, the irregularity of rainfall and rising temperatures could increase electricity demand and drive prices higher, especially if the wet season loses strength in the Southeast.
