Weather patterns and El Niño influence 2026 Christmas snow forecasts

Weather patterns and the El Niño phenomenon are creating uncertainty regarding the possibility of a white Christmas in New York and New Jersey for 2026. The National Weather Service defines a white Christmas as having at least one inch of snow accumulated on the ground on the morning of December 25.

Historical data from NOAA indicates that the highest probabilities for snow accumulation are concentrated in the northern United States and higher elevation areas, such as Alaska, Minnesota, and parts of New England. In contrast, coastal northeastern regions like New York and New Jersey have lower historical probabilities.

Within New York, mountainous and northern regions have better prospects than New York City. Central Park, the official meteorological reference for the city, has a long history of snowless Christmases, though it did record a white Christmas in 2024 after a 15-year hiatus. Similarly, in New Jersey, snow is more likely in the northern and elevated areas than along the coast. Climate models suggest a strengthening El Niño phenomenon for the 2026-2027 winter, which may influence storm trajectories and temperatures.
