Wegovy oral semaglutide pill released in Germany and USA
The oral version of the weight-loss medication Wegovy, containing the active ingredient semaglutide, is now available in Germany following EU Commission approval in July. The pill has also been on the market in the United States since early 2026.
Semaglutide works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, which signals satiety to the brain and reduces hunger. While originally developed for type 2 diabetes, it is now widely used to treat obesity. According to the OASIS-4 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, participants taking the 25 mg daily tablet lost an average of 13.6 percent of their body weight over 64 weeks, compared to 2.2 percent in the placebo group.
Users may experience a slightly higher risk of mild side effects compared to the weekly injection. In Germany, costs for the treatment start at approximately 172 euros per month, depending on the dosage and pharmacy.
