Weight-loss medications pose risks of muscle loss and nutrient deficiency
Medical experts are warning about the risks associated with the unsupervised use of GLP-1 receptor agonists, commonly known as weight-loss pens. Endocrinologists note that while effective for obesity, these medications can lead to significant muscle mass loss (sarcopenia), vitamin deficiencies, and hair thinning due to drastic reductions in food intake.
To mitigate these risks, specialists recommend prioritizing nutritional density and maintaining high protein intake—approximately 1.2g/kg for young adults and 1.5g/kg for seniors. Monitoring tools such as bioimpedance and hand grip strength tests are advised to ensure muscle loss does not exceed 25% of total weight lost. Additionally, rapid weight loss may impact facial aesthetics, causing loss of volume and sagging.
The rise in medication use is also driving market shifts. Food companies like Liv Up and Vapza are seeing increased demand for high-protein, specialized meal kits tailored to the dietary needs of patients on these treatments.
