Weight Regain Linked to Brain's Defense Mechanism, New Research Shows

Recent studies reveal that the human brain and body are biologically programmed to protect stored fat, making long‑term weight loss difficult. After dieting, hormones such as leptin fall while hunger signals like ghrelin rise, prompting increased appetite and a reduction in resting energy expenditure that exceeds what body size alone would predict. Researchers at the University of Copenhagen described this as a “defended body weight” system that can even “remember” a previous heavier set point and work to restore it.

Animal experiments at UT Southwestern Medical Center support the same concept. Mice that had been made obese and then returned to a normal weight displayed persistent hyperphagia when given free access to food, indicating that the drive to regain weight persists beyond the dieting period. The findings help explain why many people experience weight regain despite disciplined effort and why obesity medications such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, which mimic gut hormones, can temporarily curb appetite but may lose effectiveness once treatment stops.
