Wes Anderson leads fundraiser to preserve historic Garden Oaks Theater in Houston

Director Wes Anderson returned to Houston for a fundraising soirée at the Hobby Center’s Zilkha Hall, drawing about 500 filmmakers, preservationists, philanthropists and movie fans. The sold‑out event was organized by Arthouse Houston to raise money for the endangered Garden Oaks Theater, a historic movie palace slated for demolition, and to secure a bridge loan for a three‑year capital campaign.

City officials proclaimed July 17 Wes Anderson Day during the night, highlighting the role of Texas film tax credits and the Houston Film Commission in supporting local productions. Anderson emphasized the broader cultural loss, noting that “old cinemas are endangered all over the world,” and the fundraiser is seen as a major push to safeguard the venue and its legacy.
