Wes Streeting reports high volume of homophobic abuse

Wes Streeting, the first openly gay Defence Secretary, has reported receiving an “unbelievable volume” of online homophobic abuse since his appointment last month. Speaking on the ‘All Talk’ podcast, Streeting stated that he has experienced more online homophobia in the last three weeks than in his entire life, suggesting that some individuals “cannot cope with the idea that a gay person might lead the armed forces of the United Kingdom.”

Despite the online hostility, Streeting noted that his appointment was welcomed by some within the Ministry of Defence as a sign of progress. He expressed pride in the transition from a period when gay individuals were banned from military service to his current role.

Historically, between 1967 and 2000, gay and lesbian personnel were prohibited from serving in the UK military. The government has since established the LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme, allowing former personnel dismissed due to the ban to apply for redress of up to £70,000. Some concerns have been raised regarding the pace of these claims and legal challenges regarding the compensation levels for those who resigned rather than being formally discharged.
