Online abuse of UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting

Wes Streeting, the UK Defence Secretary, has reported experiencing an “unbelievable volume” of online homophobic abuse since assuming his role. Speaking at the Edinburgh Fringe and later on the ‘All Talk’ podcast, Streeting stated that the hostility he has encountered in his first few weeks has surpassed anything he has experienced in his career. He suggested the abuse stems from individuals who “cannot cope with the idea that a gay person might lead the armed forces of the United Kingdom.”

Streeting noted that while the online treatment has been intense, his appointment has been viewed by some within the Ministry of Defence as a sign of progress. He highlighted the historical shift in military policy, noting that homosexuality was a criminal offense for military personnel until 1994.

Relatedly, the government has implemented the LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme to provide redress of up to £70,000 for former personnel dismissed due to previous bans, though there are ongoing discussions regarding the pace of claims and legal challenges over compensation levels.
