West African Examinations Council releases 2026 BECE results, withholds nine private candidates' scores

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has posted provisional results for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) taken by private candidates. Of the 2,987 candidates registered nationwide, 101 were recorded absent and the results of nine candidates were withheld pending investigation of suspected collusion during marking. WAEC made the results available on its Ghana website and provided an irregularities portal for affected candidates.

Separately, WAEC rejected claims that private‑school candidates were disadvantaged in the grading process. John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, said the allegations were “false, misleading and have no factual basis,” emphasizing that scripts are marked uniformly using an internationally recognised stanine system. The council welcomed an independent audit if professionally conducted and urged stakeholders to use official review procedures.

The council affirmed its commitment to exam integrity and fairness for all candidates.
