West African Nations Brace for June Rainstorms and Flood Risks

Senegal's national meteorological agency ANACIM warned of rain and thunderstorms affecting several regions from 11 – 20 June. Expected conditions include weak to moderate rain that could become locally heavy, especially in the eastern, southern and central areas such as Bakel, Kédougou, Tambacounda, Kaffrine, Nioro, Kaolack, Fatick and Diourbel, with possible isolated showers in Dakar and Thiès.

In neighbouring Mali, meteorologists forecast a generally favorable rainy season but caution that irregular rainfall and flood hazards may occur. Rainfall totals are projected to stay near the three‑decade average, though short dry spells could interrupt showers. Agricultural experts advise farmers to ensure adequate soil moisture before planting and to use dry‑scraping techniques to preserve moisture. Authorities remain vigilant for strong rain, lightning and potential flooding, recalling severe floods from the previous year.
