Throughout the 2026 rainy season, West African nations have faced fluctuating precipitation, intense storm periods, and ongoing flood mitigation efforts. In June, meteorologists in Senegal and Mali warned of irregular rainfall and flood hazards. Ghana also issued forecasts for thunderstorms and flash flooding risks. In Senegal, agricultural impacts were noted as irrigation gaps and delayed rains initially affected mango ripening and fruit size, though officials expected a strong overall harvest despite fruit-fly management efforts. Infrastructure responses continued through July. Niger mobilized road maintenance crews to safeguard the national network ahead of heavy rains. In Senegal, authorities accelerated drainage and water-flow projects in Saint-Louis and Touba, aiming for completion by mid-July to prepare for the August Grand Magal. Parallel drainage works were also launched in M'Bahiakro, Côte d'Ivoire, as part of a multi-year sanitation programme. Weather patterns remained volatile. After a brief period of stable conditions in early July, Senegal experienced multiple waves of intense rain and thunderstorms. ANACIM issued several warnings throughout July and August, covering various regions from Dakar to the southern borders. In early August, Guinea's meteorological agency issued severe alerts for heavy thunderstorms and high flooding risks in Lower Guinea, including Conakry. Concurrent warnings for Senegal highlighted significant activity in the south, even as central and northern regions faced high temperatures. By mid-August, weather volatility persisted. Guinea’s National Meteorological Agency warned of heavy thunderstorms, strong winds, and high flooding risks for Lower Guinea, specifically targeting Conakry, Kindia, and Boké, between August 9 and August 11. In Senegal, ANACIM forecasted stormy weather in the south, including Kédougou, Tambacounda, and Ziguinchor, while central and northern areas faced temperatures between 36°C and 39°C. As September progressed, the Senegal River experienced an unexpected hydrological surge due to heavy rainfall and storms in the upper basin, particularly in Guinea’s Fouta Djallon massif.
