West African nations meet to strengthen regional border governance

Representatives from eight West African nations and the ECOWAS Commission gathered in Banjul, The Gambia, for the 3rd Annual Meeting of Heads of National Boundary Commissions. Held from October 6 to 8, 2026, the summit focused on strengthening regional cooperation, enhancing border security, and accelerating boundary operations including delimitation, demarcation, and reaffirmation.

Participating nations included Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. The meeting serves as a consultation mechanism established in 2024 to improve technical collaboration and political commitment regarding border management. Participants discussed the implementation of previous recommendations from the 2025 meeting in Cotonou and explored ways to involve local authorities and technical teams in resolving challenges to regional integration.

Key objectives include the development of bilateral agreements to define technical requirements for boundary operations and the use of compatible equipment to ensure smoother cross-border development and peaceful coexistence.
