West African border governance and security

Overview

In October 2026, West African nations focused on enhancing regional border governance and security. Representatives from eight nations and the ECOWAS Commission met in The Gambia for the 3rd Annual Meeting of Heads of National Boundary Commissions. The summit aimed to strengthen cooperation, improve border security, and accelerate boundary operations such as delimitation and demarcation.

Concurrently, practical security challenges emerged regarding migration. In The Gambia, immigration authorities intercepted 81 suspected migrants and arrested two alleged traffickers during operations in Brufut and Kuntaya Village. Additionally, in Ghana, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre called for tightened border controls following reports of approximately 2,000 illegal migrants entering the country between March 2025 and July 2026, emphasizing the need to balance national security with international legal protections for those fleeing danger in the Sahel.
