West African Nations Strengthen Border Health Controls to Block Ebola Spread
Health authorities in West Africa are stepping up surveillance and screening at airports, seaports and land crossings to reduce the risk of importing Ebola virus disease. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is harmonising public‑health response strategies among its members, including Senegal, by training frontline workers, decentralising laboratory capacity and pre‑positioning personal protective equipment.
In parallel, Sierra Leone has launched a digital Health Travel Portal at Freetown International Airport and key border points with Guinea and Liberia. The system requires travellers to submit electronic health declarations, vaccination records and lab results, allowing officials to receive real‑time alerts on high‑risk individuals for immediate screening or isolation. The portal aims to replace paper forms, improve data accuracy and integrate with the Africa CDC Trusted Health network.
Both initiatives adopt a “One Health” approach, linking human, animal and environmental data to detect viral threats early and to coordinate rapid containment across the region.
