Following instructions from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the Enforcement Branch and Kolkata Police conducted raids in several markets across West Bengal on Sunday to monitor vegetable prices after a sharp rise in recent weeks. Officials inspected Shyambazar, Kole Market, Garia Bazaar and Jadu Babur Bazar in Kolkata and also visited markets in Baruipur (South 24 Parganas) and Shantipur (Nadia).
Panskura Purba MLA Subrata Maity made a surprise visit to vegetable markets and fertilizer shops in Deulia Bazar and Kolaghat (East Midnapore) to check pricing. Traders attributed the price surge to continuous July rains and a supply shortage, while alleging possible price manipulation. Reported rates included papaya and pumpkin at Rs 30‑40 per kg, brinjal over Rs 80‑90 per kg, green chillies at Rs 200 per kg and tomatoes at Rs 115‑120 per kg. Police said prices were broadly similar across markets and monitoring would continue to prevent variation.
