West Bengal Christian communities face attacks and institutional pressure
Christian communities and educational institutions in West Bengal are facing increased pressure from religious extremists and government scrutiny. In late September, two separate attacks on house churches occurred in the East Midnapore and North 24 Parganas districts. In East Midnapore, a mob of approximately 50 men allegedly entered a prayer service, assaulting a pastor and worshippers while shouting slogans. A day earlier, in North 24 Parganas, a group reportedly used iron rods and sticks to attack a home where worshippers were gathering, damaging religious texts and furniture.
Beyond rural prayer meetings, elite Christian educational institutions such as St. Xavier’s College and Serampore College are also facing mounting pressure. Reports indicate that government officials have conducted surprise visits to these colleges amid inflammatory social media claims regarding illegal religious conversions. Additionally, the termination of Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) accounts has reportedly impacted the financial stability of these historic institutions, affecting scholarships and development projects.
