Religious violence and institutional pressure in West Bengal

Overview

Throughout August and into late October 2026, West Bengal has experienced a series of attacks and disruptions targeting Christian gatherings and prayer meetings. Reported incidents include the forceful removal of a coffin in Purba Bardhaman, property damage in Howrah, and disruptions in Ghusuri, Purba Medinipur, and North 24 Parganas. Violence escalated in early September with reports of a mob vandalizing a Presbyterian house church in East Medinipur and the alleged abduction of Pastor Sukhendu Singh in West Medinipur.

In late September, further violence was reported in East Midnapore, where a mob of approximately 50 men allegedly assaulted a pastor and worshippers, and in North 24 Parganas, where a group used iron rods and sticks to attack a home. Data from the India Hate Lab (IHL) indicates that between May 13 and September 20, 2026, at least 60 incidents targeting Christians were documented across 13 districts, including 52 raids on private prayer meetings and eight cases of physical assault or vandalism. On October 9, an armed mob of approximately 200 individuals attacked the Annual Santhali Mega Bible Convention Retreat in the Nadia district. More recently, in mid-October, police were deployed in Paschim Medinipur following reports that three Christian families in the Chandrakona area were assaulted and pressured to renounce their faith.

Pressure has also extended to elite Christian educational institutions, including St. Xavier’s College and Serampore College. Following the formation of a BJP government in May 2026, officials have conducted surprise visits to these colleges amid inflammatory social media claims regarding illegal conversions. Furthermore, the termination of Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) accounts has reportedly impacted the financial stability of these institutions, affecting scholarships and development projects.
