Religious violence against Christians in West Bengal

Throughout August and into early September 2026, West Bengal has experienced a series of attacks and disruptions targeting Christian gatherings and prayer meetings. Reported incidents include the forceful removal of a coffin during a burial in Purba Bardhaman, property damage and assaults in Howrah, and the disruption of services in Ghusuri, Purba Medinipur, and North 24 Parganas.

Violence escalated in early September with reports of a mob vandalizing a Presbyterian house church in East Medinipur and the alleged abduction of a pastor in West Medinipur. In the Sunderbans, confrontations occurred involving Argentine and Spanish nationals accused of attempting religious conversions. Local groups, such as the Hindu Jagran Manch, have threatened protests against what they term “forced conversions”.

In response to the rising intimidation, Christian organizations in the region have implemented new safeguards, such as requiring mandatory written applications and affidavits for those seeking to convert. Some groups have also suspended house prayers in certain areas due to safety concerns. While police have launched investigations into several incidents, authorities have noted that some disputes may stem from local issues regarding land use or residency status.
