West Bengal Christian institutions face increased scrutiny and attacks

Christian institutions and individuals in West Bengal, India, have faced increased scrutiny and attacks following the formation of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in May 2026. Government officials have conducted surprise visits to prominent educational landmarks, including the Roman Catholic-run St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata and the historic Serampore College.

Reports from the India Hate Lab (IHL) indicate that at least 60 incidents targeting Christians were documented across 13 districts between May 13 and September 20, 2026. These incidents included 52 raids on private prayer meetings, homes, and churches, alongside eight cases of physical assault, mob violence, or vandalism. Various Hindu nationalist organizations have been identified in connection with these actions, often accusing organizers of illegal religious conversions.

The pressure on these communities is being amplified by digital propaganda on social media platforms, where videos of raids and interrogations are frequently shared. Additionally, the termination of Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) accounts has reportedly impacted the financial stability of several historic Christian institutions, affecting scholarships and development projects.
