West Bengal Christians implement safeguards following religious attacks

Christian organizations in West Bengal, India, are implementing new safeguards, including mandatory written applications and affidavits for converts, following a series of attacks and intimidation incidents. These measures aim to counter narratives regarding religious conversions that have preceded violence against the community.

On September 6, two separate incidents were reported in the state. In East Medinipur district, a mob of approximately 125 people reportedly vandalized a Presbyterian house church in Rangilabasan village, breaking a cross and assaulting a woman during the incident. In West Medinipur district, a group of about 25 people allegedly stormed a home in Nandapurya village and forcibly abducted Pastor Sukhendu Singh during a prayer service. Witnesses claim the pastor was taken to a local office of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Tensions have also escalated involving foreign nationals. In the Sunderbans region, residents confronted Argentine and Spanish nationals, accusing them of attempting to convert Hindus during a meeting. Local leaders from the Hindu Jagran Manch have threatened protests if what they term “forced conversions” do not cease.
