West Bengal CM honors victims of 1946 Great Calcutta Killings

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari issued a tribute to the victims of the 1946 Great Calcutta Killings, also known as Direct Action Day. In a social media post, Adhikari described the event as a “dark and tragic chapter” in the city's history, noting that the violence resulted in the loss of thousands of innocent lives.

Adhikari urged the people of West Bengal to remember the suffering and magnitude of the loss to ensure such a “horrific breakdown of humanity” is never repeated. He specifically criticized “appeasement politics,” suggesting it was a factor that fueled the communal violence and bloodshed that occurred during the four-day period in August 1946.
