West Bengal political leadership transition
Overview
Political tensions in West Bengal have intensified following a shift in state leadership. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently issued tributes to the victims of the 1946 Great Calcutta Killings, describing the event as a “dark and tragic chapter” and criticizing “appeasement politics” as a factor in the historical communal violence.
Following a significant assembly election victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which secured 206 of 294 seats, Adhikari has taken legal action against former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. On August 29, Kolkata Police registered a suo motu FIR against Banerjee and organizers of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) for allegedly violating a Calcutta High Court order during a foundation day rally on August 28.
While the High Court had granted conditional permission for the rally on Cathedral Road, requiring one lane to remain open, police allege organizers blocked both lanes, causing significant congestion. The FIR further claims the event exceeded its mandated time limit and that supporters engaged in scuffles with law enforcement and dismantled barricades. The case was registered at the Hastings Police Station under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
In response, Trinamool Congress leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien, have accused the Kolkata Police of failing to comply with Supreme Court guidelines by not uploading FIRs within the required 24-hour window following an incident at the AITC office. Legal counsel for Banerjee has initiated steps to seek contempt proceedings against the involved officers.
Additionally, Adhikari has demanded a public apology from Anandabazar Patrika for using the term ‘saffron hooliganism’ in a headline, arguing the phrasing targets a religious symbol.
