Mamata Banerjee faces FIR over alleged violation of Calcutta High Court rally orders

Kolkata Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and organizers of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). The legal action follows an August 28 foundation day rally on Cathedral Road, where police allege participants violated Calcutta High Court directives. Specifically, the court had mandated that one lane of the road remain open for traffic and that the event conclude by 3 PM. Authorities claim the rally blocked both lanes, exceeded the permitted timeframe, and involved supporters dismantling barricades and scuffling with law enforcement.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed the police to take action, citing the visible breach of judicial conditions. In a separate matter, Adhikari has demanded a public apology from Anandabazar Patrika for using the term ‘saffron hooliganism’ in a headline, arguing the phrasing targets a religious symbol.

Concurrently, Trinamool Congress leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien, have accused the Kolkata Police of failing to comply with Supreme Court guidelines by not uploading FIRs within the required 24-hour window following an incident at the AITC office. Legal counsel for Banerjee has initiated steps to seek contempt proceedings against the officers involved.
