West Bengal Heavy Rains and Sundarbans Boat Tragedy Claim Nine Lives

The India Meteorological Department warned that heavy rainfall will continue in West Bengal until 14 July, affecting districts such as Bankura, Birbhum, the Bardhaman sub‑regions, Nadia and Murshidabad. The department recorded up to 89 mm of rain in a 24‑hour period in Koochbihar and humidity levels reaching 100 % in some areas, with daytime temperatures between 25 °C and 27 °C.

In a separate incident near the Sundarbans, a fishing boat named “FB Maan Kali” capsized after losing contact on 5 July. Nine fishermen were recovered dead and six remain missing. The vessel had departed from Shankarpur Fisheries Port on 2 July with 15 crew members. Police, the forest department, the Indian Coast Guard and fisherman groups conducted a joint search, and the bodies were sent to a sub‑divisional hospital for post‑mortem. State minister Deepankar Ghosh inspected the site and briefed officials on ongoing rescue efforts.
