Baruipur rape‑murder suspect killed in police encounter
A 12‑year‑old girl from Baruipur, West Bengal, went missing on July 4, 2026; her body was recovered the next day inside a sack in Surjyapur. The grisly discovery sparked protests, road blockades, tyre‑burnings and the lynching of an innocent man wrongly suspected of involvement. Police formed a six‑member Special Investigation Team (SIT) and arrested several suspects.
On July 8, police took the prime accused, Prabhas (Prabash) Mondal, to the crime‑scene reconstruction site. According to officials, Mondal seized a police officer’s service weapon, fired at officers, and attempted to flee. Officers returned fire in self‑defence; Mondal was wounded and declared dead at Baruipur Hospital. His mother publicly refused to claim his body, saying he got “the result he deserved.”
The encounter prompted political controversy, with opposition parties accusing the West Bengal BJP‑led government of adopting a Uttar Pradesh‑style “encounter” policy. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered the Director General of Police to submit a report within 72 hours and announced that around 200 people involved in the post‑incident violence would be arrested. Further investigations into the police‑fire incident and the overall case continue.
