West Bengal's Special Task Force (STF) arrested Hamim Mondal, a suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) operative, from a rented flat in Burdwan district. He is alleged to belong to an ISI‑backed network that collected personal information on political leaders, including West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, and to have planned a sabotage operation at a Jantar Mantar protest in Delhi by wearing a police uniform.
The STF also detained Arpita Sarkar, identified as Mondal's close associate and girlfriend, after locating her in Sahibganj, Jharkhand. Investigators say she helped run a "honey‑trap" scheme aimed at luring and extorting politicians and their families. Both suspects were remanded for 14 days of police custody. Evidence recovered includes WhatsApp chats, foreign SIM cards issued in the United Kingdom and Mexico, and links to Pakistani handlers and the Sajjad Bhat group linked to the 2019 Pulwama attack.
