The West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) arrested Hamim Mondal, a suspected Jaish‑e‑Mohammed operative, from a rented flat in Burdwan town on 31 July. He was placed in 14‑day STF custody by a West Bengal court. Investigators say Mondal was in contact with Pakistan‑based handlers and recovered international SIM cards issued in the United Kingdom and Mexico from his devices.

Mondal is alleged to have planned to infiltrate the student protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, organized by the Cockroach Janata Party, by wearing a police uniform to create unrest. The plot reportedly targeted West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and other political leaders. A female associate, 22‑year‑old Arpita Sarkar of Jharkhand’s Sahibganj district, was also arrested and remanded for 14 days. Police allege the duo were part of a honey‑trap network aimed at gathering personal information on senior politicians, including the chief minister, and extorting families of state ministers.

A tailoring shop owned by Mondar in Pilkhana, Howrah district, was identified as a possible contact point for his associates. Following the arrests, BJP MLA Chandra Sekhar Banerjee urged residents of Durgapur’s Tapaban City housing complex to verify tenant documents and report suspicious activity. In response to the alleged threat, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari began travelling in a bullet‑proof vehicle.
