West Bengal Jaish-e-Mohammed arrests

Entities: West Bengal Special Task Force · Suvendu Adhikari · Jaish-e-Mohammad · Jaish-e-Mohammed · Arpita Sarkar

Overview

The West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) has intensified its crackdown on a suspected Jaish‑e‑Mohammed (JeM) network. After the July‑30 detention of Hamed Manda and the July‑31 seizure of Hamid Mandal, investigators linked the suspects to possible plots against state leaders and to the Sajjad Bhatt module in Jammu‑Kashmir.

On 1 August 2026 the STF arrested Arpita Sarkar, a Jharkhand resident alleged to have run a “honey‑trap” operation that gathered personal data on West Bengal politicians, including Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. She was transferred to Purba Bardhaman and is due before a Kolkata court. Later that morning, STF officers apprehended Hamim Mondal, identified as a JeM operative, from a rented flat in Burdwan. Authorities allege he was part of an ISI‑backed cell that planned sabotage at a Jantar Mantar protest in Delhi by disguising himself in a police uniform. Investigators recovered WhatsApp chats, foreign SIM cards issued in the United Kingdom and Mexico, and evidence of coordination with Pakistani handlers and the Sajjad Bhat group linked to the 2019 Pulwama attack. Both Mondal and Sarkar were remanded for 14 days of police custody while the probe expands.

Subsequent reports on 1 August confirmed the locations of their detention—Mondal in Burdwan and Sarkar in Sahibganj, Jharkhand—and reiterated the seized digital evidence. A 2 August briefing added that the suspect, also referred to as Hameem, was alleged to target the state chief minister (named in some accounts as Subhendu Adhikari) and to infiltrate the Jantar Mantar protest, with a parallel scheme to kidnap a minister’s son for ransom. The investigation remains ongoing.
