West Bengal JeM arrests continue

Overview

The West Bengal Special Task Force’s anti‑Jaish‑e‑Mohammed operation, which began with the July 30 detention of Hamed Manda and the July 31 seizure of Hamid Mandal, has intensified. On 31 July the STF arrested Hamim Mondal from a rented flat in Burdwan, placing him in 14‑day custody. Investigators recovered UK‑ and Mexico‑issued SIM cards and linked Mondal to Pakistan‑based handlers. He is accused of planning to infiltrate a student protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, organized by the Cockroach Janata Party, by wearing a police uniform to stir unrest and to monitor West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. A 22‑year‑old associate, Arpita Sarkar of Jharkhand, was also detained and alleged to have run a honey‑trap network that collected personal data on senior politicians for extortion. A tailoring shop in Pilkhana, Howrah, is suspected to have served as a contact point.

On 3 August the STF arrested Aditya Singh, identified as a second aide to Mondal. Singh is accused of supplying detailed information on BJP legislator and state minister Umesh Rai and his family, facilitating honey‑trapping, blackmail and possible abduction attempts. Documents recovered from Mondal also revealed the schedule of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, prompting heightened security for the chief minister. BJP MLA Chandra Sekhar Banerjee has urged residents to verify tenant documents, and the chief minister now travels in a bullet‑proof vehicle.
