British Columbia search and rescue teams conduct multiple wilderness operations
Multiple search and rescue operations have been conducted across British Columbia to assist hikers and paddlers in various terrains.
On the West Coast Trail near Port Renfrew, a multi-agency response was required to rescue a hiker with a suspected lower-limb injury. Due to the difficult terrain near the Old Steam Donkey area, a helicopter extraction was deemed necessary. The operation involved Parks Canada’s Visitor Safety Team, Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue, Alberni Valley Rescue Squad, Arrowsmith Search and Rescue, and Ascent Helicopters.
In the Monashee Mountains, Vernon Search and Rescue conducted an overnight mission to locate two hikers near Monashee Lake. The rescue, which involved thermal drone technology, was prompted by a communication mix-up with the hikers' family. The team noted the hikers were not fully prepared for the rain and cooler temperatures.
Additionally, search crews from three Vancouver Island teams, including Westcoast Search and Rescue, Alberni Valley Rescue Squad, and Arrowsmith Search and Rescue, successfully located a canoeist and their dog on Kennedy Lake. The rescue followed a report that winds had increased, making the paddler's situation difficult.
