Overview

Search and rescue operations have been active on Vancouver Island to assist injured hikers in rugged terrain. On September 1, an 18-year-old hiker with a head injury was rescued via helicopter at Chin Beach on the Juan de Fuca Trail through a multi-agency response.

Following this, on September 4, another hiker sustained a suspected lower-limb injury near the Old Steam Donkey area of the West Coast Trail. Because the terrain made a stretcher carry unfeasible, rescue teams including Parks Canada and various search and rescue squads coordinated a helicopter extraction to provide medical care.

On September 7, additional wilderness operations were reported across British Columbia. In the Monashee Mountains, Vernon Search and Rescue utilized thermal drone technology during an overnight mission to locate two hikers near Monashee Lake after a communication mix-up with their family; the hikers were reportedly unprepared for rain and cooler temperatures.

On Vancouver Island, three search teams—Westcoast Search and Rescue, Alberni Valley Rescue Squad, and Arrowsmith Search and Rescue—successfully located a canoeist and a dog on Kennedy Lake after reports that increasing winds had made the paddler’s situation difficult.
