Luke Bronin wins Democratic primary, ousting Rep. John Larson in Connecticut
Luke Bronin, the former mayor of Hartford, has won the Democratic primary for Connecticut’s 1st Congressional District, unseating 14-term incumbent John Larson. Bronin, 47, secured approximately 53% to 54% of the vote, while Larson, 78, received between 32% and 35%.
Bronin’s campaign centered on a call for “generational change,” arguing that the Democratic Party needs new energy to confront the current administration. He had previously secured the state party’s endorsement. Larson, who has served in Congress since 1999, had the backing of the state’s congressional delegation and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, but was unable to overcome Bronin’s momentum and fundraising.
The race also drew attention to concerns regarding Larson’s health following a seizure he suffered during a House floor speech last year. Larson, a longtime progressive and ranking member of the House Social Security Subcommittee, conceded the race and called for party unity. Bronin is expected to face Republican Amy Chai in the November general election.
