Connecticut primary results and congressional shift

Overview

Following the August 11 primary, former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin won the Democratic primary for Connecticut’s 1st Congressional District, unseating 14-term incumbent U.S. Representative John Larson.

Bronin, 47, secured approximately 53% to 54% of the vote, campaigning on a platform of “generational change” and the need for new energy within the Democratic Party. Larson, 78, received between 32% and 35% of the vote. Despite receiving the backing of the state’s congressional delegation and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Larson was unable to overcome Bronin’s momentum and fundraising. The race also highlighted concerns regarding Larson’s health following a seizure on the House floor last year.

Larson, a longtime progressive and ranking member of the House Social Security Subcommittee, conceded the race and called for party unity. Bronin, a Rhodes scholar and U.S. Navy Reserve officer, is expected to face Republican Amy Chai in the November general election.
