West Java drought triggers emergency water distribution

Drought conditions in West Java have triggered a growing water crisis, prompting emergency distribution efforts in Cianjur and Sukabumi.

In Cianjur, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has increased its clean water distribution schedule to meet rising demand. Approximately 30,000 liters of water are being delivered daily to 1,000 households across 13 affected districts, including Cianjur, Ciranjang, and Cugenang, as local water sources continue to dry up. The BPBD is collaborating with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), local police, and water utility companies to reach both residential areas and public facilities. Additionally, volunteers are conducting socialization efforts to prevent fires caused by improper waste burning during the dry season.

In Sukabumi, the PMI is responding to a crisis affecting nearly 500 residents in the Cibeureum district. In areas such as Kampung Cibuntu, residents have faced shrinking well water levels, forcing them to rely on expensive purchased water. The PMI, supported by local water utilities, has distributed 5,000 liters of water to 120 households to assist with essential needs like cooking and hygiene. Authorities are also educating the public on water conservation and sanitation during the drought.
