Brazil reports West Nile fever cases and one death

Brazil has confirmed several cases of West Nile fever, including two in São Paulo and two in Santa Catarina, with one death reported in the latter state. A probable case is also under investigation in Piauí.

Medical experts, including infectologists from the University of São Paulo, state there is no cause for panic. They note that while the virus is widespread globally, transmission in Brazil is rare and typically occurs through the bite of an infected Culex mosquito that has fed on birds.

Most infections are mild or asymptomatic, with less than 1% of cases progressing to severe neurological complications such as encephalitis or meningitis. Because humans are considered accidental and terminal hosts, the risk of a large-scale epidemic is considered very low by specialists.
