West Nile fever cases confirmed in Serbia

Serbia's Institute for Public Health "Dr Milan Jovanović Batut" reported the first two laboratory‑confirmed cases of West Nile fever for the 2026 surveillance season. Both patients, aged 75 and 82, reside in Belgrade and were admitted to the Clinic for Infectious and Tropical Diseases with a neuroinvasive form of the disease.

The institute urged the public to adopt mosquito‑bite prevention measures: use repellents on exposed skin, wear long‑sleeved light‑coloured clothing, avoid outdoor activity at dusk and dawn, install window and bed nets, keep indoor spaces air‑conditioned, and eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed. Anyone showing compatible symptoms should seek medical attention promptly.
