Italy health authorities respond to West Nile and Dengue outbreaks
Multiple regions in Italy are responding to outbreaks of mosquito-borne viruses, specifically West Nile and Dengue.
In the Abruzzo region, health authorities have confirmed three cases of West Nile virus. These include a 75-year-old in Teramo, a 67-year-old woman in the province of Pescara currently hospitalized in Chieti, and an elderly individual in the Teramo area. Local health services (ASL) have launched epidemiological investigations and intensified mosquito surveillance to prevent further spread.
In Puglia, the municipality of Margherita di Savoia has initiated extraordinary disinfection measures following two West Nile cases in the BAT province, including an 84-year-old tourist currently hospitalized in Bisceglie.
In Umbria, health authorities reported a case of Dengue fever in Perugia, identified as an imported case from a resident returning from abroad. Additionally, a West Nile case was detected in a resident of Castiglione del Lago. In response, local municipalities, including Perugia and Monza, have issued ordinances for intensive adulticide and larvicide treatments to reduce mosquito populations and prevent further transmission.
