West Nile Virus Cases Confirmed at Skopje Infectious Disease Clinic

The University Clinic for Infectious Diseases in Skopje confirmed two laboratory‑verified cases of West Nile virus. Both patients are hospitalized and are being monitored continuously according to current medical guidelines.

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. While most infections are mild or asymptomatic, elderly individuals and those with weakened immune systems can develop serious neurological complications. The clinic warned residents to use repellents, wear long‑sleeved clothing, install window screens and eliminate standing water to reduce mosquito breeding.

Health officials emphasized that there is no cause for panic but urged heightened vigilance during the summer peak of mosquito activity. The cases coincide with recent reports of West Nile virus activity in other parts of Europe, prompting ongoing epidemiological monitoring.

Patients exhibiting high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, altered consciousness or other neurological symptoms after a mosquito bite are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
