West Nile virus cases confirmed in Cook County and Cyprus

Health officials in both the United States and Cyprus have reported recent human cases of West Nile virus.

In Cook County, Illinois, four human cases have been confirmed, all involving adults. This follows a previous case reported in Piatt County. Experts note that while approximately 80 percent of infections are asymptomatic, some individuals may experience mild symptoms like fever and headache, while others may develop severe neuroinvasive complications affecting the brain or spinal cord.

In Cyprus, the health ministry confirmed four cases this summer, with two additional probable cases currently under investigation. Deputy Director Elizavet Constantinou stated the situation is “under control” and has not led to a significant rise in hospitalizations. Officials have classified the Cyprus cases as imported and have implemented increased response measures, including mosquito spraying in identified outbreak areas. Residents, particularly vulnerable groups like the elderly, are urged to take precautions against mosquito bites.
